Summary
  • Describes the expansion of European power over the globe by colonization and by the adoption of European styles and ideas by non-European countries
  • Asia was the most powerful region of the world during the 1600's, with a population three times more numerous than that of Western Europe. Industry flourished, China was famous for its skilled craftsmen, while India was the centre of the textile industry. By 1800 large portions of India and Southeast Asia were controlled by Europeans, with China and Japan becoming increasingly vulnerable to western influence. This was a direct result of growing internal economic and political problems in Asia, and the expansionist policies of Europe
