Summary
  • The main objective of the evaluation of the KSDPP is to attribute observed changes in children's eating habits and physical activity patterns to their exposure during a three year intervention. The intervention is aimed at lowering the prevalence of obeisity and sedentary lifestyle among children in Kahnawake. Obesity and the lack of physical activity are two known factors related to non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
  • The design of the evaluation includes a pre- and post- cross sectional survey during the first and third year of the project of all elementary school children in the community of Kahnawake and in a comparison community. There is also an annual follow-up of two cohorts of children in grades 1 and 2. The outcomes for the intervention are obesity and physical activity. In the evaluation, obesity is measured in four different ways: body mass index, skinfold thicknesses, waist and hip ratio, and bio-impedence. Physical activity is assessed with a self report frequency questionnaire complemented with a physical fitness test (run and walk). Other variables are also measured through a questionnaire such as healthy eating habits, perceived self-efficacy about physical activity and eating habits, knowledge about healthy eating habits, physical activity and health
  • A process evaluation has been on going to monitor and study the implementation of the project in Kahnawake. Access to advisory facilities, availability of healthy options in convenience stores, support from parents, and intra and extra curriculum activities in the school are monitored on a regular basis. The baseline measurements were undertaken in the fall of 1994 before the implementation of the intervention in the school. The participation rate for the children in the two elemetary schools in Kahnawake was 87.1 % and 70.9% for the comparison community. The rationale behind this evaluation design will be discussed and put into perspective according to the objectives of the interventioon
