Summary expansion
The Pennsylvania Abolition Society, originally known as the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage, was founded in 1775 at the Rising Sun Tavern in Philadelphia. In the 1780s the Society reorganised, revised its constitution and broadened its membership to include non-Quakers. In 1787 it changed its name to the Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery and for Improving the Condition of the African Race. The Society not only campaigned for an end to slavery but also worked to help enslaved persons and to assist freed slaves and free African Americans living in Philadelphia to find employment and social and educational opportunities. The papers of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society include minutes and reports of the Society's various committees, correspondence, financial papers, manumissions, indentures and legal papers and miscellaneous papers covering their various activities
